KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Last week, KCS assistant vice president sales and marketing Darin Selby, Midwest Division general manager Chad Devenney and Southeast Division David Carroll attended the American Short Line and Regional Railroad annual conference in San Antonio, Texas. This year’s conference had the highest attendance ever with just over 1,700 participants.

In addition to networking and participating in various educational tracks, including finance and administration, legal, legislative and regulatory, marketing, technology, operations and safety, KCS sponsored the conference golf outing.

“Our participation in this conference is part of a larger initiative to align KCS with our short line partners and extend our market reach,” said Selby. “We’re also developing short line partner profiles, which will soon be available on our website. These profiles are serving to educate both our sales team and customers about the capabilities of our short line partners.”

Additionally, on September 27 and 28, KCS will host its annual short line conference in Kansas City, Mo. For the first time, this conference will be combined with KCS’ annual transload conference.

“There are a lot of synergies between these two segments of our business,” added Selby. “Sometimes, it’s more efficient or cost-effective to set up a transload on one of our connecting short lines, especially when multiple switches are needed. This conference will put both our short line and transload partners in one place to learn about the KCS operation, network and develop ideas for new business.”

“Nearly every customer has a dock for a semi-truck. With rising gas prices, they should consider finding the closest rail door to back their truck up to. We’re here to help them do that,” said Selby.
