MEXICO CITY — A Kansas City Southern freight train has derailed in western Mexico.

The company’s Mexico subsidiary says eight cars left the tracks Monday evening as the train rolled into the town of La Purisima. Some of the cars spilled fuel that ended up in an irrigation canal.

Railroad officials and local firefighters helped evacuate several dozen people living nearby as a precaution.

Kansas City Southern de Mexico said Tuesday in a statement that no injuries were reported.

Officials are working to clean up after the derailment.

It was unclear what caused the cars to leave the tracks.

The train was traveling between Morelia and the port of Lazaro Cardenas.
