(The Associated Press circulated the following story on July 31.)
SANTA FE, N.M. — Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry and his running mate, John Edwards, will campaign by train across New Mexico at the end of next week.
Gov. Bill Richardson announced the campaign plan at a news conference.
Richardson said Kerry and Edwards will travel by Amtrak train across the state on Aug. 6-7, going through Raton, Las Vegas, Lamy, Albuquerque and Gallup.
“It will be a very exciting, barnstorming tour through northern New Mexico, northwestern New Mexico,” Richardson said.
Kerry campaign spokesman Ruben Pulido Jr. declined to confirm the campaign schedule outlined by the governor. He said dates and locations of campaign stops in New Mexico will be announced next week when the candidate’s schedule becomes final.
On Friday, Kerry left Boston to start a coast-to-coast campaign swing through 21 states.
Richardson said he would focus his political attention on New Mexico in the presidential campaign.
New Mexico is considered a battleground state in the presidential campaign because it could swing in favor of either Kerry or President Bush.
