CLEVELAND, May 10 — BLET members are encouraged to attend a one-day Radiological Transportation Safety Training class hosted by the National Labor College in Salt Lake City on June 25.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the number of rail shipments involving radioactive materials is expected to increase in coming years. Beginning as early as 2007, the DOE is expected to begin a 38-year project to transport spent nuclear fuel and high level radioactive waste from DOE sites to storage and disposal facilities. With the increase in rail shipments comes the increased risk for rail incidents involving radioactive material.

The one-day course will help rail workers increase their knowledge of the transportation of radioactive materials by rail. The eight hour course covers information on radiological basics — biological effects and contamination vs. exposure; DOE radioactive shipments; FRA oversight of radioactive materials; response to a radioactive material incident; and a hands-on component demonstrating radioactivity monitoring devices.

The course takes place at the Salt Lake City Community College, Meadowbrook Campus, Building B, Rooms 107 and 130, on Monday, June 25, 2007, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

To register for this course, fax, mail or e-mail completed registration forms to the Hazmat office (see contact information below) as soon as possible. Interested rail workers may also call Carol Rodgers at the Hazmat office and register by phone. Space is limited and registrations are accepted on a first-come, first served basis.
