NEW YORK — State criminal-justice director Katherine Lapp yesterday was appointed the new executive director of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (news – external web site) by MTA Chairman Peter Kalikow, according to the New York Post.

Lapp is expected to be approved by the MTA board later this month to replace Marc Shaw, who resigned to become deputy mayor of operations under Mayor Bloomberg.

Lapp would become the first woman to lead the day-to-day management of the MTA, which operates city subways and buses, in addition to commuter railroads and several bridges and tunnels.

“She has demonstrated her administrative abilities many times over,” Kalikow said.

Before taking her state job, Lapp was criminal-justice coordinator in the Giuliani administration, and chief-of-staff and special counsel to the deputy mayor for public safety under Mayor David Dinkins.
