WASHINGTON — Amtrak resumed limited service into Washington on Thursday afternoon, several hours after a New York-bound train partially derailed.

The railroad was continuing to investigate, but believed a switch malfunction might have caused some of the wheels on two cars of the train to partially derail. It happened just as the train left Union Station shortly after 9 a.m. No one was hurt, and all seven cars remained upright.

About three hours later, trains began running from Washington to the north. By 3 p.m., there was limited southbound service to Washington, but several trains were still terminating in suburban New Carrollton, Md. From there, passengers had to take the Metrorail subway the rest of the way.

The service problems also forced the MARC commuter line serving the Maryland suburbs to cancel several trains. The Virginia Railway Express commuter line said it was not affected because its trains only run from Union Station to the south.
