NEW YORK — Long Island Rail Road engineers have until Sunday to vote on a proposed new contract that would avert a possible strike, officials said Wednesday.

The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen Division 269, representing about 400 LIRR train operators, reached a tentative agreement with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority late last month, according to the union. Members can vote on the deal until 3 p.m. Sunday.
