NEW YORK — Some 1,200 Long Island Rail Road passengers were trapped for more than an hour under the East River yesterday after their train lost power, officials said.

Travelers were stranded near Long Island City, Queens, as emergency workers hitched a rescue train to the back of the stalled rig, which had left Penn Station for Ronkonkoma, L.I., at 1:15 p.m., authorities said.

Passengers then walked from the stuck train into the rescue one, which took them back to Penn Station. One woman suffered an anxiety attack and was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan, firefighters said.

The remaining passengers continued their journey to Ronkonkoma in the rescue train.
