NEW YORK — Efforts to resolve the labor dispute between the MTA and Long Island Rail Road workers — who have vowed to strike this summer unless they have a contract — came up short again on Thursday. Metropolitan Transportation Authority management and union leaders met behind closed doors in Manhattan on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in mediation sessions led by an independent panel appointed by the White House.
