SAGINAW, Tex. — A Union Pacific train engineer was injured Thursday evening when a tractor-trailer pulled in front of the train at a Saginaw railroad crossing, fire officials said.

The semitrailer was westbound on the 100 block of Minton Road when the southbound train smashed into the rear third of the trailer, Saginaw fire Lt. Scott Craver said.

The trailer was hauling 1,100 five-gallon containers of cooking oil, vegetable oil and shortening, Craver said. The truck driver was not injured.

The impact shattered the train’s front windshield, spraying glass onto the engineer, who was cut on his arms, Carver said. The injuries weren’t life-threatening, he said.

The crossing arm was mangled on the ground.

Craver said he didn’t know how fast the train was going.

The accident is under investigation.
