OMAHA, Neb. — As low demand and economic factors far from home pinch everyone at Union Pacific, Chief Executive Lance Fritz said additional austerity measures aren’t out of the question. Among the people who work on the rail and in the terminals — the conductors, engineers, track and yard workers — Union Pacific said in its earnings release Thursday that fourth-quarter furloughs of such union employees rose by 44 percent from October to 3,900.
