EL PASO, Texas — Union Pacific Railroad was named the nation’s top military-friendly employer for 2005 in the current issue of G.I. Jobs magazine, to be released Friday.

In El Paso County, the railroad employs about 700 people with an annual payroll of $44.4 million, according to the company.

The monthly magazine ranks companies based on the strength of their military recruiting efforts, the percentage of new hires with prior military service and company policies toward National Guard and reserve service.

Last year, Union Pacific was ranked sixth in the magazine’s survey.
