BRANDON, Manitoba — A 20-year-old man suffered a severed leg and an injury to his other foot, but survived after getting caught under a train Saturday, the Canadian Press reported.

Brandon city police and CN Rail believe the man may have been riding in one of the train’s cars and either fallen out or attempted to jump out.

“This person is very lucky to be alive,” CN spokesman Jim Feeny said. “The early indications are that the individual was trespassing on our property and somehow did himself a very serious injury.

“Unfortunately, we have a case here where someone was very seriously injured because they were somewhere they should not have been.”

The CN coal train, with about 100 cars, left Brandon for Winnipeg about 5:25 a.m. CN’s control centre was notified by Brandon police about 5:45 a.m. that one of its trains had been involved in an accident.

It wasn’t known how long the man may have been on the train or if he was alone, Feeny said.

Brandon police continue to investigate.
