ORANGE CITY, Fla. — Troopers charged a DeLand man Saturday with careless driving after his sport utility vehicle was abandoned in the middle of a railroad track and plowed into by an oncoming freight train, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reported.

No one was injured, and officials with the Florida Highway Patrol are still investigating the accident.

Travis Everhart, 22, was cited for careless driving because he was the last known driver of the SUV, troopers said.

The vehicle was driven north along the tracks about a mile south of East French Avenue in Orange City. The driver of the SUV then tried to cross the tracks, but got stuck, according to the Highway Patrol. The vehicle was then abandoned.

Shortly before 2 a.m., a northbound CSX freight train slammed into the empty vehicle. No one on board the train was hurt.

The train, however, suffered about $3,000 in damage. The SUV sustained about $5,000 damage, according to the Highway Patrol.
