PORTLAND, Ore. — A BNSF Railway Co. police officer shot and injured a man Saturday afternoon after the man threw a lighted gas can on the ground and pointed a weapon at the officer, Portland police said.
Police didn’t release the name of the man, who was taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital & Health Center.
About 4 p.m., the BNSF officer came across the man, believed to be a transient, along railroad tracks near North Portland Road, said Officer Cathe Kent, Portland police spokeswoman.
The officer discovered that the man had an arrest warrant against him. The man ran, and the officer chased him. A Portland police canine unit assisted; a police dog found the man about a mile away near a transient camp shortly before the shooting.
Kent wouldn’t say what type of weapon the man had or describe his injury.
