STOCKTON, Calif. — A 34-year-old man lost his legs early Monday when he was run over by a train, police said.

The accident happened about 2 a.m. when a Union Pacific train began moving on the Burlington North Santa Fe tracks south of Hazelton Street at Aurora Street. Police said they’re unsure why Pablo Medina, 34, of Stockton, was under the train when a conductor began moving cars on the track by remote control.

A car wheel severed Medina’s legs just below the waist, police said.

He was taken to San Joaquin General Hospital.

He was listed in critical condition Monday evening.
