NEAR BOWIE — An unidentified man was in a Tucson hospital Saturday afternoon after having his leg severed during an attempt to jump onto a moving train.

Union Pacific Railroad employees discovered the man at 9:20 a.m. Saturday after he apparently attempted to board the moving train in an area about seven miles east of Bowie.

The man appeared to have made the jump but then lost his grip and slid into the moving wheels, said Carol Capas, spokeswoman for the Cochise County Sheriff’s Department.

One of the man’s legs was severed, and the other sustained serious injuries above the knee, Capas said.

After being dragged about 200 yards, the train stopped and the man was flown to a Tucson hospital for treatment. His condition was unknown Saturday afternoon.
