LUMBERTON, N.C. — A train crushed the legs of a man who grew impatient while waiting for it to switch cars and tried to crawl under the train.

Thomas Faison, 45, of Lumberton, was trying to squeeze under the cars when the train began backing up Tuesday night, said Lumberton police Officer Steve Hardin.

Faison was in serious condition Thursday at Duke University Medical Center.

The conductor saw Faison pacing near the railroad crossing near Chippewa Street about 10 p.m., Hardin said, but didn’t see him later.

One of Faison’s legs was nearly amputated by the weight of the train. The other leg was severely fractured above the knee.

CSX employees were checking the track and found Faison, who was conscious, he said.
