Earlier this week, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) announced an agreement with the city of Somerville on a new preferred site for a vehicle maintenance and storage facility for Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s (MBTA) Green Line extension to Somerville and Medford.
The new site eliminates many of the “negative neighborhood impacts” associated with the original site proposed by MassDOT, and presents opportunities for long-term planning and development, MBTA officials said in a prepared statement.
The agreement paves the way for the future redevelopment of the areas closest to the Green Line light-rail extension, which is scheduled to open in 2014, they said.
