BOSTON, Mass. — Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Company today announced that six new interns are aboard for the third year of ABCD (Action for Boston Community Development), which supports inner-city teenagers.

Over the course of the next month, the six students will learn about on-board rail operations (locomotive engineer’s role; conductor’s and assistant conductor’s role); train dispatching; rail safety and train maintenance repairs. The interns will work closely with specific departments such as HR, customer service, transportation and administration.

“MBCR realizes that continual outreach to urban communities through Progressive partnerships such as the ABCD internship program is the only way to ensure ongoing, continued diversity in our workplace. MBCR is committed to providing each ABCD intern an experience that not only enriches their knowledge and skill sets, but educates them to the excellent career opportunities that are available in the rail industry,” said Harold Hofman, Chief of EO & Diversity, MBCR.

ABCD SummerWorks provides jobs and educational programs for low income, at-risk teenagers from Boston’s inner-city neighborhoods. These jobs include education, mentoring and tutoring. SummerWorks is an extended program that keeps inner-city teenagers off the streets, connected with caring adults and involved in productive activities. In ABCD SummerWorks, at risk teenagers work at real jobs and receive mentoring, tutoring and career development services, providing them with the tools and motivation to do well in school and life.
