BOSTON — MBTA officials said the consortium that runs commuter rail services is meeting short-term goals of being on-time and increasing the number of air-conditioned cars.

But MBTA general manager Daniel Grabauskas said the service must continue to improve.

The Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad operates commuter rail under a five-year, $1 billion contract with the T.

Graubauskas had a meeting the railroad’s officials after passenger complaints last month.

The consortium’s on-time performance hit almost 93 percent at the end of last week, after a dip to 89 percent in June. It also has 32 coaches without air conditioning, less than one per train.

Scott Farmelot, a spokesman for the consortium, said it expects to make more improvements in the coming weeks.
