CLEVELAND, February 9 — The George Meany Center-National Labor College has added four hazardous materials training courses for railroad workers to its 2004 schedule.
The new four-day courses have been scheduled in the following locations:
March 22-25, 2004 — Dallas/Ft. Worth, Tex.
March 29-April 1, 2004 — San Antonio, Tex
April 19-22, 2004 — Carteret, N.J.
May 17-20, 2004 — Sacramento , Calif.
Participation for these four programs is limited to rail workers living in the local area. No overnight accommodations will be provided; however, participants who are unable to receive regular pay from the railroad to attend training are eligible for a stipend of $428 for the four days of training, and per diem to cover meals and mileage to and from the training facility. Transportation, lodging, and meals are provided by a Federal grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).
This training, eligible for three academic credits from the George Meany Center-National Labor College, addresses OSHA and DOT required procedures and different levels of response and worker protection in case of a hazardous materials emergency or release. Training also includes advanced classroom instruction and intensive hands-on drills. The highlight of the course is a simulated hazmat response in full safety gear.
These four workshops are in addition to the two hazmat courses that the Meany Center has already scheduled on the following dates:
May 2-6, 2004 — Silver Spring, Md.
June 6-10, 2004 — Silver Spring, Md.
Unlike the four workshops above, the two workshops on the campus of the Meany Center are open to anyone regardless of where they live. However, space is limited to approximately 25 for each program. Completed registration forms should be faxed, mailed or e-mailed to the Hazmat office as soon as possible. Online registration is also available at http://www.hazmatgmc.org.
