CLEVELAND, August 20 — Due to increasing demand, the George Meany Center-National Labor College will conduct an extra hazardous waste/chemical emergency response training program this year at its campus in Silver Spring, Md.

“Many of our training programs are over-subscribed,” said Brenda Cantrell of the Meany Center. “Perhaps due to the events of September 11, this year, there seems to be an even heavier volume of applications for hazmat training.”

The extra class will be held from September 15-19. The program is a “no stipend” training class, meaning those who attend are not eligible for the usual $428 stipend paid upon completion of the workshop.

However, all other expenses will be paid by the George Meany Center, including transportation, room and board.

The training sessions address OSHA and DOT required procedures, different levels of response, and worker protection in case of a hazardous materials emergency or release. The training also includes advanced classroom instruction and intensive hands-on drills.

The highlight of the course is a simulated hazmat response in full safety gear.

Transportation, lodging and meals are provided for all participants by a Federal grant.
