CLEVELAND, April 16 — The George Meany Center/National Labor College is looking for railroad workers to attend its four-day Hazardous Waste/Chemical Emergency Response Course next month in Sacramento, Calif.
Space in the workshop is limited on a first come, first served basis. Approximately 10-15 spots remain for next month’s class, which will be held May 17-20 at the IBEW-NECA Training Center in Sacramento.
Highlights and benefits of the course include:
- Addresses OSHA and DOT required procedures and different levels of response and worker protection in case of a hazardous materials emergency release;
- Includes advanced classroom instruction and intensive hands-on drills;
- Conducts a simulated hazmat response in full safety gear; and
- Is eligible for three academic credits from the GMC-NLC.
Federal training funds are provided for each participant. A stipend of $428 is available for participants who are unable to receive regular pay through the railroad to attend training. Also, a per diem of $35 per day ($140 total) is available for meals and mileage to and from the training location.
The training course is federally-funded by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), and administered by GMC-NLC in cooperation with seven rail unions.
