ARKANSAS CITY, Kan. — The cost of a proposed Amtrak route from Texas to Kansas City would range from $155.8 million to $479 million, depending on which of four possible routes is chosen.
The Kansas Department of Transportation will outline the plans for the public Tuesday at a meeting in Arkansas City.
Last Thursday, transportation officials discussed a recently completed Amtrak study to Arkansas City and Winfield officials and the Cowley County Commission heard about the plans.
The Arkansas City Traveler reports that reactions were mixed after the meeting.
County Commissioner Gary Wilson says the route would make it easier for people from the area to go to Kansas City or Wichita. But Commission Chairman Alan Groom called the costs of establishing a route with a stop in Cowley County “stupid expensive.”
