CHICAGO — A federal law requires the nation’s major freight and commuter railroads to install Positive Train Control technology by 2015. Metra and other railroads say they are committed to doing so, but need more time. Metra officials also say the cost — well over $200 million — is diverting scarce capital funds from other critical needs. Those include improvements to existing tracks, stations, signals and other infrastructure that also make Metra safe for its 300,000 daily riders.
