Metra announced on January 14 that it is installing more efficient air filters on its train cars and switching to cleaner fuel for its locomotives to help reduce commuter and worker exposure to toxic diesel fumes.
The rail service also said it is upgrading more of its locomotives with technology that automatically shuts down the engines while trains stand inside Chicago’s downtown stations. And it plans to use one of its trains to test equipment that could dramatically curb lung- and heart-damaging pollution.
