CHICAGO — Metra says that about 84 percent of respondents to a survey on quiet cars endorsed them. So beginning June 6, trains on all 11 Metra lines will have quiet cars during rush-hour, making Metra the largest commuter line in the country to offer such sanctuary.

The rules on quiet cars are strict: Passengers are asked not to make cell phone calls, play music or engage in audible conversations. If they need to take a call, they are asked to use the train’s vestibule. Conductors pass out cards reminding passengers of the rules, and signs with a silhouette of person saying, “Shhh” also drive home the point.
