POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Metro-North will need another two years to roll out state-of-the-art technology that puts the brakes on speeding trains, frustrating officials who’d hoped the work would be done by the end of the year. Metro-North recently received a waiver from the Federal Railroad Administration giving the railroad until 2020 to install and activate Positive Train Control Technology (PTC) across its roughly 800 miles of track. That means the Dec. 31, 2018, deadline established by Congress amid a series of deadly derailments on the nation’s railroads won’t be met.
