WASHINGTON — U.S. Secretary of Transportation Norman Y. Mineta announced a grant of $12.1 million in Federal Transit Administration (FTA) funds to the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority for the Tasman Corridor Extension Project.
The Secretary also announced a $1.5 million Job Access grant to the California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS).
“Transit plays an important role in relieving congestion, and improving our quality of life,” said Secretary Mineta. “This regional rail system will help provide safe, efficient and reliable transit services while conserving energy and enhancing the environment.”
The Tasman Corridor Extension Project is an extension of the existing 21-mile Guadalupe Corridor LRT. This grant funds the western extension of the LRT, which begins in downtown Mountain View and run eastward thorough Sunnyvale, connecting with the northern terminus of Guadalupe line near Great America Parkway in the City of Santa Clara.
The extension includes approximately 7.6 miles of new track construction and 12 new stations. A new park-and-ride lot is also provided. This extension serves an additional 10,000 riders per day and opens up additional areas of Silicon Valley for transit users.
