TOPEKA, Kan. — Third District U.S. Rep. Dennis Moore filed for his fourth term Wednesday, with the filing deadline for the Aug. 3 primary approaching.
Moore, who represents Douglas, Johnson and Wyandotte counties, joined Lee Jones, another Johnson County Democrat, who filed Tuesday for the party’s nomination to challenge Sen. Sam Brownback, an incumbent Republican.
The filing deadline is Thursday.
Moore does not have an opponent in the primary, but will face the winner of a three-way race between Adam Taff, Kris Kobach and State Rep. Patricia Lightner. Moore defeated Taff in 2002.
Jones, 53, of Lenexa, is a railroad engineer and was a lobbyist for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers in Topeka before serving as the union’s national legislative liaison in Washington.
Jones joins Robert Conroy, 76, a retired Shawnee railroad worker, in the Aug. 3 primary. The Republican Brownback also has a primary opponent, Arch Naramore, of Lawrence.
Brownback was elected in 1996 to finish the term of Sen. Bob Dole. He was re-elected to a full six-year term two years later. He previously served in the U.S. House.
