STAMFORD, Conn. — The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has awarded Siemens Rail Automation and Bombardier Transportation Rail Control Solutions a contract worth up to $428 million to install a system on Metro-North and Long Island railroads designed to alert engineers to potential collisions.
Under the contract, Siemens and Bombardier would work together to develop and build a positive train-control system for the two railroads to comply with a federal safety mandate enacted in 2008 after a California train accident killed 25 people. The rules are expected to be finalized later this year.
