LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — The Metropolitan Transportation Authority plans to spend a whopping $51 billion over the next five years to create a faster, more accessible, and more reliable public transportation system, including $5.7 billion on the LIRR. Although the majority of the budget — $40 billion — is earmarked for New York City subways and buses, the LIRR also receives enough funding to enable what officials call a “historic transformation” of the railroad by the planned December 202 opening of the East Side Access and Main Line expansion.
