RALEIGH, N.C. — Amtrak train service between Florida and the Northeast was disrupted Wednesday when rail inspectors discovered a bridge in eastern North Carolina that needed urgent repairs.

CSX Transportation, which owns the tracks, closed the bridge about 10 miles north of Selma on Wednesday afternoon. Repairs are expected to be completed by Friday, with Amtrak altering or canceling some routes scheduled for Thursday.

Amtrak has canceled service for four trains that run between New York and Miami, as well as two auto trains, which carry passengers and vehicles, between Lorton, Va. and Sanford, Fla., through Thursday.

In addition, the New York-Charlotte, N.C., and New York-Savannah, Ga., runs will end at Rocky Mount, N.C., on Thursday. Amtrak will provide bus transportation for the remainder of those routes.

Amtrak is offering refunds and future travel dates for affected passengers.
