NEW YORK — A Manhattan jury ordered the Long Island Rail Road to pay $247,000 to a woman injured when she fell into a train-platform gap.
Judith Cohen, who’s 72, suffered fractures in her knee and shoulder during the 2006 accident in Huntington Station. The jury found that Cohen was partly responsible for her fall into the 9-1/2 inch gap.
Her attorney said the award was for pain and suffering, and lost productivity for husband, Joseph Cohen.
The LIRR issued a statement saying it is “evaluating its next steps” in the case.
The railroad said its improvements include an education system to make customers better aware of gaps between platforms and trains.
