BUFFALO, N.Y. — A state lawmaker says New York needs to take measures that will ensure the safety of hazardous railroad shipments.

State Senator Marc Coppola of Buffalo says seven other states have adopted legislation that regulates rail shipments of hazardous cargo through major urban and rural areas.

Coppola says the Buffalo-Niagara region’s high concentration of industrial sites linked by railways makes tougher security regulations necessary.

Coppola succeeded Byron Brown in a February special election after Brown was elected mayor of Buffalo.
