CLEVELAND, November 8 — Every day more than one million tons of hazardous materials are transported by rail cars, which travel past homes, schools, hospitals, through the middle of cities and along highways. Over the next decade the amount of radioactive waste to be carried by rail will grow substantially. A single hazmat incident has the potential to kill hundreds of thousands within minutes and yet there is little quality training of those who would be affected most — rail workers, emergency responders, and citizens in “rail communities.”

Citizens for Rail Safety, Inc. (CRS), a national non-profit public interest organization comprised of transportation consultants and concerned citizens advocating for national railroad safety and efficiency, will present a Symposium on November 15 at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

Keynote speaker Congressman Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, industry experts, political leaders and transportation scholars will discuss the safety and security of our national railways. The National Labor College will also release the findings of a CRS commissioned study on the need for Hazmat training.

Speakers representing the Teamsters Rail Conference will include John Tolman, Vice President and National Legislative Representative of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, and Rick Inclima, Director of Research for the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes.
