GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Customs officials say new rail cargo inspection systems are being installed at two area border crossings.

Area Director Henry Torgerson said the systems will be working soon at Portal, in northwestern North Dakota, and at Noyes, Minn., near Pembina, to X-ray rail shipments coming to the United States.

“Rail movement, especially containers, move from all over the world, and cross at these rail crossings,” Torgerson said.

The new inspection systems, costing about $2 million each, are to be in place by mid-November in Portal and by late November in Noyes, he said. They already have been installed at International Falls, Minn., and at Blaine, Wash., he said.
