GREENCASTLE, Pa. — Norfolk Southern is on track to break ground later this year for its new intermodal facility in Greencastle, a company official told members of the Greencastle-Antrim Chamber of Commerce this morning.
Roger Bennett, director of industrial development for Norfolk Southern, spoke during a chamber breakfast. He said that most of the land needed for the $95 million project has been under option or agreement since last year. In the next week or so, the company plans to begin “pre-advertising” the project to construction companies.
“The idea is we would go out to bid the first of June. We’d like to start in September,” Bennett said.
The new facility will compete with CSX’s rail-truck yard in Chambersburg, which opened in 2007.
There were a number of factors that made the Greencastle site attractive to Norfolk Southern, but Bennett said it is rare for a rural area like Franklin County to have two intermodal facilities.
