LONDON — In the United States, the increased capacity could have profound effects on the transportation industry, as the cost of shipping from Asia to ports in the eastern United States would drop significantly. Simply put, bigger ships are more economically efficient and lower per-unit costs. Larger ships and lower costs meant importers traditionally chose to ship to the West Coast from Asia and then to the Eastern US by rail.
