CALGARY — The Canadian Pacific Railway train that derailed, leaked crude oil and ignited a large fire in rural Saskatchewan Thursday was using new, industry-standard tank cars meant to be more puncture-resistant than their predecessors, the ones that exploded in Lac-Mégantic, Que. “The cars were TC-117J cars, which meet all Transport Canada standards,” a CP spokesperson confirmed Friday. ConocoPhillips, which owns the diluted bitumen on board Thursday’s CP train, also confirmed the train was using the new tank type endorsed by Canadian regulators in 2016.
