MEXICO CITY — Mexico’s Transportation Ministry said that it has authorized the construction of a 65-mile (100-kilometer) railway line that will link the border cities of Ensenada and Tecate, then cross into the United States and connect to California’s railway system, a wire service reported.
The Ensenada-Tecate line will create the region’s first rail corridor for cargo containers, linking Esenada’s port with Plaster City, California, the ministry said in a statement.
The ministry said that the dlrs 230-million project will be financed by the government of western Baja California state and represents the first new Mexican railway line to be built in more than 30 years.
The railway is expected to be especially useful for export-oriented companies who will be able to ship goods into Esenada’s port and then transport them into the United States by train, the ministry said.
