NEWARK, N.J. — A new mile-long extension of the Newark subway will open July 17, linking the city’s two railroad stations.

The light rail train will come above ground after Newark Penn Station and will drop off passengers along five new aboveground platforms, including one at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.

The service will provide a connection from Newark Penn Station to its sister Broad Street station.

Passengers will ride the same light rail cars used on the subway’s main line.

The $207.7 million project was paid for with federal and state dollars and will be operated by New Jersey Transit.

Fares are $1.25 each way and customers using monthly or weekly NJ Transit passes can transfer to the light rail system at no additional charge, said Dan Stessel, an NJ Transit spokesman.
