LITTLE FALLS, N.J. — NJ Transit is building a new rail station at Montclair State University to provide students and commuters direct service to New York on the Boonton Line, a wire service reported.

The $26 million project is due for completion in spring 2004. The station and a 1,300-space parking deck will be built on university property across from Yogi Berra Stadium.

The station is intended to serve commuters who now drive on Routes 3 and 46, and will offer direct access to New York and Hoboken.

“One of the top priorities of this administration is to ensure that the state’s transportation infrastructure is efficient and reliable,” Gov. James E. McGreevey said in a ceremony at the station site on Monday.

The station will consist of an 800-foot center-island elevated platform with canopies, and an automobile pick up/drop-off area. The parking deck and station will be connected by a pedestrian overpass.

Clove Road near the station will be realigned as part of the project.

NJ Transit’s board of directors is expected to authorize design and construction of the station on Wednesday. Funding will be provided by the state’s Transportation Trust Fund and state Economic Development Authority bonds.

Parking revenue will be used to cover operating costs and bond financing.
