HOBOKEN, N.J. — NJ Transit started construction yesterday of a $6.4 million pedestrian bridge that will link Hoboken Terminal and Jersey City, completing a critical segment of the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway.

The pedestrian bridge, over the Long Slip Canal, will connect the walkway to the Newport section of Jersey City and give residents and workers direct access to light rail, bus, ferry and PATH services, as well as the waterfront.

The bridge, being built by Simpson & Brown of West Cranford, will be 175 feet long and 30 feet wide. Construction should be completed early next year.

The walkway, a linear recreational system of parks, piers and open space, now extends along 15 miles of the Hudson County waterfront. It will eventually stretch 18 miles, from the Bayonne Bridge to the George Washington Bridge.
