NEWARK, N.J. — NJ Transit’s fleet of ancient electric powered rail cars are headed on a one-way trip to the junkyard. The agency is poised to spend almost $700 million to purchase 113 multi-level III rail cars to replace the 40-year old plus Arrow III fleet of electric powered trains. NJ Transit’s board of directors awarded a contract to Bombardier Transit Corp. at the Wednesday board meeting. A Chinese rail car manufacturer was the only other bidder.
