NEWARK, N.J. — Despite the state’s budget woes, NJ Transit officials said riders will be spared a fare hike this year.

Executive Director Richard Sarles said at the agency’s board meeting Wednesday that NJ Transit is making cuts, primarily in administrative areas.
“Under the governor’s budget there is no fare increase,” Sarles said. “I recognize it is extraordinary, given the budget crisis.”
Sarles said $20 million in potential cuts has been identified, and officials are looking to cut further. NJ Transit rail, light rail and bus passengers saw a 9.9 percent fare increase last year.
