WASHINGTON, D.C. — The National Mediation Board is pleased to announce the selection of Zachery Jones as Senior Mediator. Mr. Jones will assume duties as Senior Mediator immediately.
As a Senior Mediator, Mr. Jones will supervise a team of mediators engaged in resolving contract disputes in the air and rail industries. He joined the National Mediation Board in October 2000, as a Mediator, and he has worked successfully on cases involving both railroads and airlines. Mr. Jones came to the Board from Howard University, where he was an Assistant Professor of Business and Sports Law.
During his tenure at Howard, Mr. Jones chaired the Judiciary/Grievance Committee in the University’s School of Business in addition to teaching courses in business law. A course developed by Jones for the university, The Law and Business of Sports, includes extensive coverage of the collective bargaining process in professional sports. He was also recognized in successive years as Professor of the Year in the School of Business by the Class of 1999 and the Class of 2000.
Prior to serving on the faculty at Howard University, Mr. Jones was of counsel with the firm of Popham, Haik, Schnobrich & Kaufman in Washington, DC. While with the firm, he was engaged in the practice of sports and employment law as Chair of its Sports and Entertainment Practice Group. Besides drafting and interpreting employment contracts for small business owners, media personalities, and business executives, he was actively involved in negotiating contracts and settling grievances on behalf of professional athletes. Earlier, Mr. Jones had been a sales representative with Norfolk Southern Corporation in Chicago.
Mr. Jones earned a Juris Doctor degree at the University of Minnesota law school, in Minneapolis, MN, and a Master of Business Administration in Marketing from Loyola University of Chicago. His undergraduate degree, a Bachelor of Arts in Communications, was awarded by Howard University.
