ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — Although some private companies expressed interest in providing passenger rail service between St. Louis and Kansas City, including St. Joseph-based Herzog Transit Services Inc., no proposals were received by the deadline, officials from the Missouri Department of Transportation said.
Herzog submitted a proposal but recalled it on March 28, citing concerns over negotiations with Amtrak, the current rail-service provider. Amtrak didn’t formally submit a proposal because it is federally owned and subsidized and has advantages over private enterprises.
MoDOT director Henry Hungerbeeler said the department would continue to evaluate options for inter-city passenger rail service between St. Louis and Kansas City.
