CHICAGO — Metra officials said today that Union Pacific North line riders should not expect any schedule changes when work begins this spring on a project to replace century-old bridges on Chicago’s North Side.

The project was originally planned to begin last summer but a new schedule caused delays and jammed trains, prompting an uproar among commuters and forcing Metra back to the drawing board.

The revised project will cost $40 million more than originally estimated, however, because new retaining walls along the west side of the tracks on Chicago’s North Side will have to be built.
